Installing the new loggers
Making sure that the sensors end up at the right depth (Photo: J. Bengtsson).I realize that the choice of working on a mire in the middle of the summer in mosquito land, when you hate mosquitoes might not be such a brilliant idea, but until today we have been really lucky with some wind that have kept the mosquitoes on some distance. Today, however, the battle began. Today was a moist and calm day, ca 14 ºC, favorite conditions for mosquitoes but not for people. A day like this you make sure to go back to the Station for lunch and do as little as possible on the mire.
The location of Storflaket is only a 10 minutes drive from the research station, so it is really luxury as you can forget things at the stations and then go back and get it. It suits me perfectly as I am sometimes somewhat confused and forget things. Luckily this year I have two brilliant field assistances so we have not had to go back yet.
Installing the new loggers; some strength is needed to get the steel pipes down in the permafrost (Photo: M.Johansson)Today's mission was to install the loggers that was prepared yesterday in the new boreholes. It is very helpful to have strong field assistances since it is quite hard work to get the metal pipes into the permafrost.
After completing our tasks for today, we decided to go to Björkliden for afternoon tea/coffee. Björkliden is a ski resort 10 km west of Abisko, where they have very nice facilities, during winter it is a ski resort, during summer you can play golf on Sweden's northernmost golf course.
In the evening, all three of us discovered new bumps in many places, so we realized that today we lost the battle against the mosquitoes.
