Days have started to run quicker, we have been here more than one week already.
Photo by Martin ProkschFor me days were busy with preparing everything for the installing my measuring devices in the field. But simply it means that I helped Niko, our technician, with all hand work. I was really amazed how well he knows and is able to use the tools. I got experience in working with electric drill, file and soldering iron, so maybe now I can find a second job as a carpenter : ).
What else did I do, I was in the field, where Thomas, Hanno and Martin (PhD student from WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF in Davos) made snow observations and sampling. They are able to spend hours at the snow pit, getting the information on snow layers, density, and other different properties.
Photo by Martin ProkschAs you can imagine, the snow cover plays very important role for the frozen ground. Snow, as a blanket, isolates the ground surface from the atmospheric influence. That's why it is so important to know how deep is snow cover and how dense is it. You probably will be surprised, but the main instruments for this job was shovel and metal beer can : ). With the last one, the snow sampling can be proceeded in the best way!
