(Photo: PAGE21) Carolina and Richard in Moscow. On the way to Vorkuta - Seida research station Our field season 2013 has started! After a quite busy week of packing and last preparations, we, Carolina and Richard from the University of Eastern Finland, got on the train to Moscow yesterday.
Currently we are enjoying a final proper "sit-down meal", before we will hop on the train once more for the 36h train ride to Seida.
Our last shower for the summer is already a day behind and after having been baked in the sun at 37C (!) all day in Moscow, we are hoping for air conditioning in the train.
It feels strange that a year has passed already and we find ourselves on the way to Seida again so soon. But we are looking forward to the summer in the field and to meeting our field team, which we will introduce later on.
As this is our second field season in Seida, we feel much better prepared now, having gained some know-how on how to survive in the Russian Arctic. So our luggage mainly comprises our Russian Army style Tundra outfits, new tents and warm sleeping bags.
Richard has been growing his beard "Tundra-style" for the past weeks already in order to fit in with the tough Seida men ;-)
Most of our scientific equipment was sent to Vorkuta already some weeks ago, but still there is a lot to carry and we'll be happy once we managed to get all our stuff as well as ourselves on the train tonight.
On Sunday we'll be met by Igor at the train station in Seida. We'll try to post regularly and keep you up to date of our field work.
