A deep hole in the river as water supply in winter time. It freezes very quickly and it is tough work breaking the ice every time to get water. Friday, 13th of December 2013
We took a picture of a small well where we can get water for the container house in winter time. At the station people drill a hole in the ice of the river, pump the water and heat it to prevent from freezing on its way to the houses, and store the water in the reservoir for approximately one week usage.
However, at the measurement site Vova is the only person who stays here all the time, and we come here only for measurements during the day, so Vova breaks the ice from time to time when we lack water.
Because it is such an effort to get fresh water, we were asked to use as little water as possible. We learned how to take a shower with only half a bucket of warm water, and the water that we used for it and for the laundry is reused for the toilet.
It is so easy to get clean water in areas where climate doesn't pose such challenges on infrastructure and even basic supplies – if you pay for the bill, you will get endless water from the tap – that many people do not realize how lucky they are. We have to pay a little more attention how much energy is used for purifying water, and try to use as little water as we can. Save water, and save the planet! :)
