The "Regional Hydrology of Terrestrial Systems" junior research group led by Jun.-Prof. Lars Kutzbach is based at the Institute of Soil Science at the KlimaCampus of the University of Hamburg. It is an integral part of the DFG supported "Integrated Climate System Analysis and Prediction CliSAP" excellence cluster. This research group studies the coupled water and carbon dynamics of terrestrial systems with a focus on peatlands and permafrost landscapes.
Since 1999, Dr. Kutzbach has been investigating the soils, the vegetation, and the land-atmosphere exchange fluxes of energy, water, carbon dioxide and methane, in arctic and boreal peatlands, in particular in the polygonal permafrost landscapes of the Lena River Delta in Northern Siberia (e.g., Kutzbach et al. 2007, Sachs et al. 2008, 2010, Wille et al. 2008). His other investigation sites have been situated in the Komi Republic, in Russia (Gazovic et al., 2010), as well as in eastern Finland and north-eastern Germany.
