The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) is a research and science agency whose main objective is to provide the Finnish nation with high-quality observational data and research-based information about the past, present and future states of the atmosphere.

The Greenhouse Gases research group of the FMI studies hydrological, energy and greenhouse gas balances in several northern ecosystems, including an arctic site at Tiksi in Siberia (71º 35'N, 128º 55'E). In Tiksi, the GHG group measures the fluxes and background concentrations of CO2 and CH4, together with different surface energy balance components. In addition to this arctic site, the GHG group is running long-term flux measurements on two subarctic wetlands and in two forests in northern Finland, which serve as reference ecosystems for the arctic site.

 

The group is also responsible for monitoring the atmospheric background concentrations of CO2, N2O and CH4 at the Pallas-Sodankylä site in northern Finland, operating as part of the Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) network of the World Meteorological Organisation. The GHG group has participated in several EU projects on carbon and nitrogen cycling such as LAPP, CARBOEUROFLUX, CarboEurope- IP, NitroEurope-IP, IMECC, and GHG-Europe.
